Winnetka, Ill. - New Trier High School students ushered in the holidays by creating a seasonal display for Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center. In return, they got a real-life lesson in marketing.
New Trier's Marketing and Merchandising in Fashion class and the local shopping center have partnered every winter and spring for the past four years. In the collaboration, students create a visual display for the shopping center between Gap and The North Face. This year's winter display -- complete with a mock hot cocoa station and ice rink -- went up on Nov. 15.
Before the installation, the marketing director from Old Orchard visited the class to introduce the project and discuss the shopping center's goals for the space, Business Education Teacher Melissa Duffy said.
"This is an amazing opportunity for students to work on a real-world project," Duffy said. "The students are the decision makers on all parts of the display."
Students began with a theme name for the display: "Baby, It's Cold Outside." They used that theme to guide them in creating props; identifying fashion trends to be represented; and buying, dressing and accessorizing mannequins.
New Trier's display at Old Orchard will be up until February. Another fashion display installation is scheduled for the spring.
