Library FAQ

Q: At what time does the library open? When does it close?

A: The library opens each morning during the week at 7:00 a.m.

Northfield campus 7 am - 4 pm
Winnetka campus 7 am - 6pm, except Fridays -closing is at 4 pm.

Please remember that the library is closed during advisory period.

Q: Where is the book/materials catalog?

A: Our online catalog is available 24/7

Q: How many items may I check out at once?

A: You may have a total of ten items checked out at one time, but only three on a particular subject at one time.

Q: How much money will I owe if I return my books late?

A: Fines on books are $.10 per day (does not include weekends or vacation days). If you pay the fine at the time you return the book, the fine is discounted by 50%. Fines on videos are $.10 per day. Fines on calculators are $1.00 per day. Special fines may apply for short term loan items. Fines must be paid before new items are loaned.

Q: What happens if I lose a book/CD/DVD?

A: You will be responsible for paying the price to replace the book, plus a $5.00 processing fee.

Q: Do I need to have my ID with me if I want to check out books?

A: Yes, you must have a current New Trier ID.

Q: Can I renew a book?

A: Yes, you may renew a book once for another two weeks only if no one else has placed a hold on that item.

Q: Can I check out a textbook?

A: The Winnetka library currently has some math, social studies and science textbooks. These are for use ONLY in the library and cannot be checked out.

Q: How much is a copy card?

A: You may buy a copy card at the circulation desk for $1.00 or $2.50 or for $5.00. Black and white copies are $.10 and color copies cost $.50. We do recycle the copy cards. When your card is out of money please recycle it by placing it in the small recycle box.

Q: What if I only need to make one or two copies?

A: The cost to make single black and white copies is $.25 per copy. You can make single color copies from the A/V room or by emailing the document to a librarian who can print it for you.

Q: How much does it cost to make a color copy?

A: $.50 will be deducted from your copy card for each color copy or color transparency.

Q: How can I make a black and white transparency? 

A: (GO TO THE FRONT CIRCULATION DESK) Black and white transparencies are 10 cents

Q: What about a color transparency?

A: (GO TO THE FRONT CIRCULATION DESK)  You must have a copy card to make a color transparency. You may make a color transparency on the color copier across from the circulation desk. The cost is the same as for a color copy: $.50.

Q:  Do you have any color printers?

A:  Printing directly to networked color copy machines is free at the Northfield campus. Ask a librarian for assistance at Winnetka.

Q: Do I need my ID to return books?

A: No, you do not need your ID to return books or to pay fines.

Q: Can I check out a calculator?

A: Yes, calculators can be checked out on a daily basis only. There is a late fine of $1.00 per day.

Q: Can I check out magazines?

A: No, magazines may not be checked out. They may be used in the library only.

Q: Can I check out videos? CDs? DVDs? (You must have your current New Trier I.D.)

A: Yes, videos, CDs and DVDs may be checked out for 3 days.

Q: Can I use the library databases from my home computer?

A: Yes! Most databases require an NT login using your same password which is used to log on at school.

Q: May I use the library computers to check my e-mail?

A: Yes, either New Trier student webmail or other home e-mail accounts. No chat rooms!

Q: Do the library computers have any word processing programs?

A: Library computers are primarily for research, but word processing may be done in the library and the computer labs, some of which have extended evening hours. All library computers have basic productivity software.

Q: Does the library have a "lost and found"?

A: Yes, it is located behind the circulation desk. Items left for more than several days will be brought down to the attendance office.

Q: May I use a library laptop if I am not with a class?

A: Yes, we have laptop computers available with I.D. to check out from the front desk. If those are all checked out, ask a librarian.
