New Trier community says goodbye to Mrs. Julia Kessel after 19 years of devoted service

Julia Kessel Farewell

Over 70 current and former students, parents, friends, and colleagues got together for Mrs. Julia Kessel's retirement party on June 2 at Centennial Park in Wilmette. The celebration was held for guests to give thanks to their beloved New Trier Chinese Language teacher, who is retiring after 19 years of excellent and devoted service to her students and the community!

Both current and former students lined up to give an appreciation speech about Mrs. Kessel. Many of them described her as a strict but fun and innovative teacher who challenged them to reach a higher goal, and they couldn't wait for Chinese class to start every day. Students said that she cared about who they are and how she could help them become a better person. She was not there just to teach the Chinese language and culture to her students; many Asian-American students said that they got to know their identity and heritage through her Chinese classes. They will all miss her very much!

In addition, many parents had kind words for Mrs. Kessel, expressing how she cared about their children and treated them like her own. They said when their children came home, they all talked about how much they enjoyed Mrs. Kessel's class. Thank you for 19 years of wonderful memories, Mrs. Kessel!
