To participate in the Mobile Learning Program, students are required to select an iPad as well as an iPad orientation date. Your family can either purchase an iPad from the District at a subsidized cost, or students can bring their personally-owned iPads (BYOD). Note: BYOD devices must meet specific requirements (see details below) .
Purchasing an iPad
iPads purchased through New Trier include a subsidy provided by the District to mitigate the cost of ownership. This shared cost between the District and families acknowledges that the device can be used at home and at school, for both educational and personal purposes. Students may only purchase one subsidized device during their time at New Trier and must return their iPad if they move out of the District before the start of the school year. Included with the subsidized purchase is an iPad, keyboard case, access to both core and curricular apps, and the option to purchase 3-year AppleCare+ extended coverage.

Families are required to make an iPad selection by May 17th, 2018 * . All iPad purchases made after September 1st must be approved by a technology manager. Families new to the District can email Ms. Diaz directly at firstname.lastname@example.org . NOTE: Only students who are enrolled during the school year may receive an iPad. If a student receives an iPad from the District and subsequently does not attend New Trier (either opting for another local school or relocating out of the district), the iPad must be returned to New Trier before the first day of school at New Trier, and a full refund will be issued.
If families require the purchase of two or more iPads in the same school year, the family will receive a $50 credit for each iPad purchased from the District. These refunds will be processed mid-September and a credit will be issued to the credit card used to make the purchase in the New Trier Web Store (RevTrak).
AppleCare+ Coverage - Optional
The cost of repairing iPad glass can be very expensive without AppleCare+ extended coverage - over $300 for an iPad Air 2, for example. The price of AppleCare+ is included in your device purchase for 3-years and will cover up to two incidents of damage; there is a $49 deductible per incident. You can take your device directly to the Apple store for speedy service. While we know that students do their best to keep their devices safe, the frequency of use throughout the school day can increase the likelihood of damage. Financial Assistance Program & Payment Plans
The District provides financial assistance for families through New Trier's Financial Assistance Program. If a family qualifies for financial assistance from the District, a loaner iPad will be provided at no cost. Applications for financial assistance will be available after June 1st, 2018. Qualification for district financial assistance, including the free lunch program, is based on household income and the guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. If you qualify for financial assistance, an iPad will be issued during orientations through New Trier's iPad Loan Program. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
Students are permitted to bring their own iPad (BYOD) for use in New Trier's Mobile Learning Program (MLP); however, through our years of experience with the program, we have found that iPads must meet a strict set of minimum requirements. Many of the apps required for class will need to run on the latest operating system (iOS), and student-authored content as well as digital textbooks will likely use up a significant amount of device storage space.
Minimum Requirements of a BYOD iPad:
- Device must be reset to factory settings . Note : It is best practice to first backup your content.
- Acceptable iPad Models: iPad Air 2, iPad Pro, or the 2017 iPad
- 64 GB of storage or greater with at least 15 GB available for curricular content
- A protective case with functioning keyboard
- A charging cable and brick (power adapter)
With regard to managing BYOD iPads, if an iPad is not purchased through the New Trier district it cannot be added to Apple's Deployment Enrollment Program (DEP). This means that a personally-owned iPad cannot be placed in a "supervised" mode in the same way as an NT-purchased iPad.
What does it mean when an iPad is placed in "supervised" mode?
When an iPad is "supervised," a teacher has the ability to focus student iPads into a specific app for the purpose of administering an assessment or if students need to be directed to a specific web page. Allowing teachers to have some degree of control of student devices in the classroom may prove beneficial with learning activities.
