The Board of Education of New Trier Township High School District 203 will hold a Public Hearing Monday, July 17, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room (C234) Building C, Second Floor, 7 Happ Road, Northfield, Illinois.
The purpose of said hearing will be to receive public comment on a renewal of a previously approved modification of Illinois School Code. Section 105 ILCS 5/27-24.3 states that a driver education course shall consist of at least 30 clock hours of classroom instruction and at least 6 hours of practice driving in a car having dual operating controls under direct individual instruction. New Trier Township High School seeks to continue a previously approved modification of school code to replace the 6 hours of practice driving in a car having dual operating controls under direct individual instruction with a minimum of 3 hours of practice driving in a car having dual operating control under direct individual instruction and a minimum of 12 hours of driving simulator experience.
Simulators offer practice with driving experiences which cannot be taught effectively or safely with behind-the-wheel driving in a car to include, but not be limited to, driving in various weather conditions, navigating diverse traffic situations, practicing safe driving responses to various emergency distractions/situations, and experiencing different types of roadway driving. Simulators also allow instructors to teach driving skills with a progressive method where students can learn from their mistakes. In addition, parents and students will collaborate on a driving journal to reinforce driving lessons and behind the wheel experiences at home. This modification of school code will better prepare students for realistic driving conditions as the simulator is able to safely place them in a variety of situations. Students will be placed in difficult scenarios, helping them develop appropriate handling and decision-making without actual risk.
