Seven New Trier students competed in the state journalism finals at Eastern Illinois University on Friday, April 27, where junior Victor Pearlman placed first in the Photo Story category and junior Stephanie Kim placed fourth in the Info Graphics category. New Trier's competitors included students from both the student newspaper, New Trier News, and the yearbook, Trevia.
The statewide tournament, administered by the Illinois High School Association, begins with sectional competitions at seven locations around the state. The top three finishers in each event at the sectional sites then go on to compete in the state final.
At these tournaments, students do all of their work onsite under deadline pressure. They generally have only 90 minutes to complete their specific tasks, and then judges assess their work. The top six finishers in each event win state medals, and the top three schools take home IHSA trophies.
On Saturday, April 21, New Trier placed third at sectionals, where the school finished in the top six out of 11 teams in 14 of the 16 categories in which they entered.
Of those categories, seven students advanced from sectionals as state finalists. The students were: senior Mack Clement, third in Newspaper Design; senior Katie Kim, third in Review Writing; junior Stephanie Kim, third in Info Graphics; senior Rebecca Lee, first in Editorial Writing; junior Alessia Liebovitch, first in Editorial Cartooning; junior Victor Pearlman, second in Photo Story; and sophomore Matt Twyman, first in Yearbook Caption Writing.
