After trailing early and the game tied 2-2 at 17:40, the defense stepped up and held the Titans to one more first half goal, en route to a 14-8 win over a tough well coached conference rival.
Sabrina Rice was big, making 10 saves, several on close range shots by All-State attacker Meg Bierley, leading to offensive goals by New Trier. Charley Meier had a career game, leading the team with five draw controls, five ground balls and getting two big interceptions that led to goals for the Trevians. Meier also had two shots for two goals.
Meier tied the game when she cut past a defender and Sophia King fed to her to tie the game 2-2 at 17:40. Both teams had scoring opportunities, but it wasn't until the defense forced a turnover and Claudia Shevitz drew a double team and passed to Sophie Randle who beat the goalie to give New Trier the lead at 13;11 that they would not give up.
Shevitz led the attack for a second consecutive game with four goals and two assists. Sophia King had 3 goals and 2 assists. Senior Courtney Kaskey had two goals and two assists. Katie Busch did a great job directing the ball on the draws and also had two draw controls.
In the second half, the Titans cut the lead to 10-6, but Izzi King buried a free position shot and the Trevs pulled away for the sectional championship win. Gaby Malnati, Sophie McGinnis, Clare Mulhern, Lydia Kaup and Claire Gottriech all played well on defense, with Madison Smith coming in to faceguard Bierely, and Olivia Tragos coming in to play some solid man defense also.
