The Trevs had to use every ounce of their perseverance and poise to defeat the Red Devils 7-5 to advance to the state final. After being shutout for almost 24 minutes in the first half, New Trier's Katherine Gjertsen beat two defenders and beat the goalie with 1:08 left in the half to cut Hinsdale Central lead to 2-1. Just 26 seconds later, Gjersten drew a penalty shot and on the whistle, fed to a wide open Sophie King on the crease, who faked and buried her shot to tie the game 2-2 at half. A tremendous defensive effort by New Trier kept them in the game, after shooting 2-12 in the first half.
In the second half, Anna Santulli tallied her second goal at 18:48 to get the lead back for the Red Devils. The defense continued to put pressure on Hinsdale and force turnovers, and Gjertsen took advantage, this time splitting a double team and dodging another defender to tie the game and then scoring on a free position shot to give the Trevs thier first lead of the game 4-3 at 13:56. Santulli was able to get open again and score to make tie the game at 12:09. On the next draw, freshman Charley Meier got the draw and Isabelle Sennett made a big skip pass to Lucy Murray behind the goal, and then broke for the goal for a beautiful give and go feed, as Murray threaded the needle and Sennett beat the goalie to get the lead back at 11:22. The Devils scored again to tie the game at 8:01 5-5.
That's when two freshman took over the game, with Meier grabbing two big draw controls and Claudia Shevitz scoring two goals. Her first came when she dodged her defender and weaved through traffic to the crease and scored at 6:25.Moments later, Meier's draw control enabled New Trier to call a possession timeout. After running down the clock and spreading the offense, Shevitz again found a seam and dodged her way to goal and scored with a nice fake and bounce shot to give the Trevs a two-goal lead with 3:20 left.
Hinsdale won the draw, but Sabrina Rice made a huge save when she stepped out and deflected a shot and New Trier got the ball back and ran out the clock. The defense forced 10 turnovers in a great team effort. Sophie McGinnis and Emma Tomlinson led the defense in limiting a very talented Red Devil offense. Gjertsen finished with three goals, Shevitz added two. Meier led the team with five draw controls. Courtney Kaskey also grabbed two draws and forced two turnovers.
