Team effort helps Trevs take down state champs

2019 HC

New Trier knew they would be in for a challenge taking on the defending state champs on their home field, but the Trevians played tough defense and had poise on offense to win 15-9 over Hinsdale Central.

After falling behind 2-0, New Trier's defense forced a few turnovers and dominated the transition game, handling the Red Devils pressure in the midfield. This enabled the offense to take advantage of some great scoring opportunities. Lucy Murray started out the scoring on a crease roll at 19:07 and then Claudia Shevitz hit Olivia Zaban on a fast break to tie the game 2-2 at 18:11. Shevitz would drill two more shots into the corner of the net to get the Trevs up 4-2. But Sydney Collignon scored her third goal at 10:57 to make it 4-3.

The defense took over, led by Claire Gottreich, who had six caused turnovers and four ground balls to lead the Trevians. New Trier shut down the Hinsdale attack for the next ten minutes. Annie Thompson stepped up on offense, as she grabbed two lose balls that rattled off the cage and scored to give the Trevians a 6-3 lead. Thompson would then make a beautiful feed on a give and go to Shevitz to make it 7-3 with 4:43 in the half. Shevitz would score again on a nice pick by Charley Meier, when Murray hit her on a feed cutting to the goal. Izzie King would finish the scoring with a beautiful dodge and then ripped a high corner goal to make it 9-3. Hinsdale would take advantage of a New Trier turnover and score with six seconds left to make it 9-4 at half.

In the second half, New Trier's defense shut down Hinsdale, with Ella Huber playing great defense on Collignon, and Mary Burke, Anna Resnick, Rylin Douthit, Madison Smith, Meier and Shevitz all doubling the Red Devils and forcing 13 turnovers. Shevitz picked up where she left off with another nice backdoor cut and Murray hit her to make it 10-4. Meier scored on a free position goal and then Murray passed inside to Shevitz once again to give New Trier their largest lead of the game 12-4 with 13:46 left.

Hinsdale didn't back down, and kept driving hard and pushing the tempo to get a couple goals to get some momentum, but the Trevs didn't let them get back on track. The teams traded goals in the last few minutes, as Thomspon scored on a couple crease rolls, and Hinsdale scored twice in the last two minutes to make it 15-9.

New Trier had six different players score. Shevitz led the offense with six goals and two assists. Murray had 1 goal and 3 assists; Thompson had 4 goals and 1 assist; King had two goals; Zaban and Meier each had a goal. Meier also had four draw controls. Huber added three draw controls. Kate Burnham had eight saves.
