The New Trier defense held the #25 team in the country to only 7 goals, but the Trevs fell to the Golden Bears 7-5.
Down 2-0 early, sophomore Annie Thompson made a nice feed to junior Madison Smith on a backdoor cut to get New Trier on the board. Lucy Murray then added two goals, on assists from Sophia King and Claudia Shevitz to make it 3-3 at half. But the defending Ohio state champs Upper Arlington went up 6-3 and despite 9 saves from Sabrina Rice and seven forced turnovers, including 2 by Smith, the offense couldn't capitalize on several scoring opportunities. The Golden Bears possessed the ball most of the second half, but Olivia Zaban drove and fed to Thompson who rolled the crease with 4:30 left and then Murray tallied a hat trick with 1:51 left to make it 7-5. The Trevs were able to get the ball back, but two shots rattled off the post in the closing minute.
New Trier (3-1) will face another Midwest power when they host the Michigan state champs Rockford on April 21.
