New Trier let a three goal load disappear twice, but they held on to defeat a very athletic and talented power in Hinsdale Central 11-9 in a thrilling win to finish the season.
The Trevs battled Hinsdale Central up and down the field and used tremendous pressure on the rides and both a man and zone defense to slow down a very dangerous attack. Katie Busch was impressive from the opening draw, directing the ball and knocking down the ball to help New Trier win 13 of 22 draws, including the first three.
Claudia Shevitz scored at 19:58 on a nice dodge to tie the game, and Lucy Murray popped open and Sophia King fed to her to make it 2-1. Hinsdale answered back, but Shevitz again beat her defender and scored to make it 3-1. Murray then dodged two defenders and made it 4-2. Hinsdale's Jenna Colligan scored her third goal of the game at 10:05 to make it 4-3. The defense stiffened the Trevs owned the ball, controlling it for over nine minutes. Shevitz against scored again when she did a stutter step dodge and sprinted past two defenders to have her shot rattle of the post and into the net at 8:59. Murray later would roll the crease and make it 6-3 with 4:53 left.
The Trevs defense forced a turnover and New Trier held the ball for over two minutes before Hinsdale jumped a pass and intercepted it, taking it down the field and Alaina Hamood scored with 32 seconds in the half.
The Red Devils carried that momentum into the second half also, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 7-6 lead with 15:20 left in the game. Sophomore Charley Meier made a huge play, stepping in front of a pass for an interception and sparking a fast break that led to Meier scoring on a feed from Shevitz. On the next possession, freshman Izzi King did a backdoor cut and got a feed from her sister, Sophia King and bounced her shot past the goalie to give New Trier the lead.
New Trier won the next draw and Murray scored on a free position and then Shevitz scored on another high dodge to make it 10-7 with 5:35 left. But the Red Devils did not quit, and scored two late goals to make it 10-9. The Trevs won the draw and spread out to slow the pace. Hinsdale pressured out and Sophie Randle was wide open in front of the goal and buried her shot on a feed from Courtney Kaskey.
The Trevs defense came up with another stop and New Trier ran out the clock. The defene was led by Clare Gottrecich, Meier, Sophie McGinnis, Lydia Kaup, Madison Smith, Claire Mulhern and Gaby Malnati. The Trevs forced eight turnovers, three by Murray and two by Meier. Olivia Zaban and Randle did a great job in transition and in getting ground balls to keep the ball on attack.
Shevitz and Murray each had four goals. Busch finished with five draw controls. Murray added 4 and Meier 3.
New Trier finishes the regular season 16-3 and enters the IHSA playoffs as the number one seed in the Glenbrook North Sectional and will play on Wednesday at 5:30 pm vs. the winner of the Deerfield/Palatine game.
