On Sunday, April 14, the 22 members of the New Trier Swing Choir joined instrumental and vocal jazz ensembles from around the country at the New York City Jazz Festival. Hosted at Symphony Space, the renowned festival provides jazz groups with an opportunity to perform for and receive comments from a panel of jazz experts. For New Trier's Swing Choir, this meant rehearsing and performing at Symphony Space, as well as participating in a master class with celebrated vocal jazz educator Jennifer Barnes. https://www.jenniferbarnesmusic.com/
According to senior Nicki Montenegro, "Our performance was the culmination of months of hard, dedicated work, and it was gratifying to be able to showcase our growth. Everyone in this choir is passionate about performing, which has created a supportive space in which to share our deep appreciation for music. Getting to work with and meet such talented professionals inspired us." https://youtu.be/ajUfgbvYlgc
During their four days in New York, the Swing Choir saw The Prom on Broadway, and Aubrey Logan perform at the world-famous Birdland jazz club, which culminated with Ms. Logan inviting the New Trier students backstage for a group photo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aubrey_Logan
Mr. Nathan Landes, who organized and chaperoned the Swing Choir trip, voiced his appreciation for the extraordinary opportunities provided by the cooperation between the Fine Arts at New Trier and the New Trier Fine Arts Association. "The NYC trip was a huge success, and we are thankful to the NTFAA for their support and help making this educational and rewarding experience possible for our students."
