Superintendent Welcome Letter

Dear New Trier Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! We are excited to have our students back on our campuses as we commit to helping every one of them in their journeys toward leading "meaningful, compassionate, and impactful lives."

Paul Sally

That last line is part of the vision statement of our strategic plan, New Trier 2030 . The phrase may not be as well-known (or recited) as our mission - "to commit minds to inquiry, hearts to compassion, and lives to the service of humanity" - but together our mission and vision encompass our values as a school district and what we hope our students carry with them after they leave New Trier.

Like our Northfield Campus students, New Trier 2030 is in its freshman year. We spent the last year collaborating with parents, students, faculty, staff, community members, and alumni on priorities for the next decade. Now we are putting those priorities into action in a number of areas, including social-emotional learning, equity, and leadership. You can find out more about our strategic plan on our website , where we will post Board presentations and updates on our first year goals. We also will share information monthly through our Board Briefs e-newsletter, mailed to all parents after each Board of Education meeting.

Of course, when we ask our graduates what was most memorable about their New Trier experience, I doubt any of them fondly reflect on strategic plans past or present. While those big initiatives are important, the everyday interactions our students have with teachers, staff, and their peers will have the greatest impact on how they remember New Trier. We want all of our students to feel welcomed, safe, respected, and heard. We are proud that 98 percent of our graduates surveyed report that they had at least one trusted adult they believed cared about them during their time at New Trier. However, we know we have work to do. We want every student to feel valued and respected every day. Our focus on equity and social-emotional learning this year and beyond will help move us toward that important goal.

As this school year begins, I invite all of you to take part in the life of the school. Attend the many excellent events sponsored by our New Trier Parents' Association, from social gatherings to Parent University speakers. Join Booster Club or the New Trier Fine Arts Association. Attend an athletic contest, a fine arts performance, or an event sponsored by the New Trier Educational Foundation. You might even take a class offered through New Trier Extension. All these opportunities can be found under the Parents/Community tab . Finally, your voice is important as we shape our future for the next decade and beyond. Please be on the lookout throughout the year for parent surveys and evening discussions about the work of the school.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful new school year!

Dr. Paul Sally
